During the Corona Virus pandemic, The Los Angeles Police Concert Band members each played their instrument from their homes to "Stars & Stripes Forever".
The Los Angeles Police Concert Band joined the California State University, Northridge, Wind Ensemble to celebrate its 60th anniversary in a combined performance Tuesday night. The concertgoers enjoyed both bands at the Valley’s Center for the Performing Arts, the Soraya. Under the baton of conductor, Richard Allen, “LA’s Own,” the LAPD band, showed off its multi-talented show tune chops with band vocalist, Christina Challey, singing Gershwin’s “S' Wonderful.” Retired Sgt. Jim Starr, LAPD’s “Singing Cop,” turned in a powerful rendition of “More” from the Hollywood hit, “Mondo Cane.” The two ensembles performed together to cover a sweeping look at the Glenn Miller catalog through a performance of, “In a Miller Mood.” And introducing the repertoire of both bands for the evening, the expert voice of emcee, LAPD Band’s Michael Ellington.
Leading the CSUN Wind Ensemble in its 60th Anniversary performance, Professor Lawrence Stoffel, Director of Bands, chose a more classical set, that included Tchaikovsky's “Dance of The Jesters.”
The night’s success was encapsulated in Professor Stoffel’s note to “LA’s Own” Executive Director, Jim Starr:
"I had to write to you all before heading home tonight after such a wonderful night. Thank you for making this concert possible. All the planning and work made for a great night of band music!
As we all know, the arts scene in L.A. is vibrant. But The LAPD Band is one of those unique, wonderful institutions that "matter" more. I wanted my students to see what a group such as The LAPD Band does for the city as well as for the arts. It was important that my students witnessed firsthand that The LAPD Band makes a difference.
I am also grateful that the CSUN students got the opportunity to play side-by-side with the musicians of The LAPD Band.
Thank you to all! It was a pleasure and an honor for us to perform with you tonight.

THE LAPD CONCERT BAND "LA'S OWN" SHOWCASED AT NATIONAL POLICE WEEK IN D.C.
The Fraternal Order of Police and its Auxialiary, sponsors of National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C., welcomed the return of The Los Angeles Police Concert Band “LA’s OWN” 28 years after it was present at the dedication of the Memorial by President George Herbert Walker Bush, in 1991.
The Band honored the celebration with a concert of patriotic songs made more poignant by the inclement weather in D.C. The attendees of law enforcement officers, families and friends did not let the rain dampen their enthusiasm for the fine music.

150 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE LAPD
In honor of the LAPD's 150 year anniversary we celebrated by performing popular marches and patriotic songs on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at the LAPD Academy.
LA’s OWN SHONE AT THE CALIFORNIA CLUB
The LAPD Concert Band “LA’s OWN” lit up the California Club in downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday evening with a collection of show tunes at the invitation of hosts Bill and Karla Ahmanson, for the Center Theater Group's Holiday Party.
The night’s festivities began with traditional Christmas music played by the Band's exceptional brass quintet, during the cocktail hour held under the night sky on the outdoor garden patio.
Lead by musical director, Maestro Richard Allen, the band members were beaming in handsome new LAPD blue uniforms, thanks to a grant by the Ahmanson Foundation. They proudly displayed replica badges of those issued in 1869 at the inception of the Police Band.
The Los Angeles Police Department partners with The Sunshine Kids Foundation to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for kids who are fighting cancer. The Sunshine Kids are sworn in as Honorary LAPD Officers. The ceremony features the LAPD Concert Band “LA’s OWN” and a flyover by an LAPD Airship. After the swearing-in ceremony, The Sunshine Kids are transported in Black & White Police cars through the streets of Hollywood escorted by a team of LAPD Motorcycle Officers displaying lights and sirens. And, throughout the day, the kids, who come from across North America with their own healthcare givers, get to experience a variety of programs and events, free of charge, which feature positive group activities and emotional support. Everyone gets to meet some of their favorite police officers and detectives from television and the movies and attend a shooting of TNT's television show "Major Crimes."
